Because we participate in the State of Vermont’s Automatic Vehicle Inspection Program (AVIP), your results will be immediately communicated directly with the state. This means:

  • You’ll no longer have to worry about turning in or storing the paper-based Vermont State Inspection report.

  • Your emissions-related and safety-related information will be automatically communicated and available to you online through your vehicle identification number (VIN).

  • You can easily access and refer to specific vehicle data to make more informed service-related decisions about your vehicle.

What Is the On-Board Diagnostic Vermont State Inspection Test?

On-board diagnostics (OBD) systems were created in the 1980s to help mechanic and technician teams efficiently diagnose and service the computerized engine management systems.

When Congress passed the 1991 Clear Air Act, it required all vehicles made after 1996 to have the OBD II. It is designed to gather certain information about the vehicle, including emissions.

In performing the Vermont State Inspection test on your OBD system, your vehicle will be connected to our electronic scan tool.

This cutting-edge tool will communicate with your vehicle’s OBD system to confirm if your vehicle has performed self-tests and triggered any Malfunction Indicator Light.

If it has, the scanner tool will retrieve the trouble codes. The test results are recorded, and we will disconnect the scan tool from your vehicle.

The entire OBD test takes only around five minutes.

What Happens If My Vehicle Fails the Vermont State Inspection?

If your vehicle fails the Vermont State Inspection, the team at Girlington Garage can help. As the best auto repair facility in the South Burlington VT area, we offer a full range of fast and affordable automotive repair solutions.

Some of the most common reasons vehicles fail the OBD section of the Vermont State Inspection are:

  • Your OBD system has not completed all of the required self tests. This can happen when an indicator light has been commanded on, there is a fault within your emission system, or if your battery has recently been disconnected. The fix for this is to make sure all necessary repairs are made, and then take your car on a drive cycle to recreate all the various conditions your car requires in order to be able to run all the different self tests.

  • A dashboard indicator light doesn’t illuminate when the vehicle is turned on. This is important because you’ll be alerted by different dashboard indicator lights when the OBD determines a problem. If your lights cannot illuminate because of a burned-out bulb or another problem, then there’s no way you’ll know it.

  • A dashboard indicator lightβ€”such as Check Engine Lightβ€”is illuminated when the vehicle is running. If this is the case, it indicates the OBD system has recognized a problem that needs repair. Your vehicle’s OBD system will deliver one or more trouble codes when this happens.

The mechanics at Girlington Garage can help in all these cases.
