Inspiring Girls to Reach for the Stars in the Automotive World in South Burlington, VT image of Girlington Garage owner Demeny Pollitt standing confidently underneath car chassis while holding auto repair tool Although women make up about half of the workforce, their presence is seriously lacking in the automotive industry. Across the entire industry, only 25% of workers are women – and it gets even more dismal at the technician level. A stunning 2% of all auto techs are women, leaving most shops with an entire team of guys wrenching on cars.

Although it has been this way for eons, change has been on the horizon – and our team at Girlington Garage is here for it. We hope to help by opening up our garage to girl-centric organizations in our community. Our passion is to inspire females both young and old that there is a place for them in the automotive industry. We are always here to provide all the resources young girls and women need to reach for the stars in the automotive world.

Girls Night Out at Girlington Garage

As a part of our efforts to make auto repair more approachable to all, we warmly welcomed our local girl scout troop to visit our South Burlington VT auto repair shop. During this fun after-hours event, we had the honor of talking shop with the industry’s future and introducing them to all things cars. Here’s how this fantastic evening went.

Keeping the Experience Low-Key

Our event started with splitting the troop into two groups to have lots of one-on-one learning experiences and plenty of fun in between. Then, to keep their journey low-key, we sent one group for a yoga lesson in the waiting room while the other got to tour the shop and learn about auto repair. Halfway through, we switched it up, letting everyone enjoy both activities to the fullest. It was a lot of fun.

Taking the Mystery Out of Cars

After that, we gave them a chance to look under the hood of a car, explore a partially disassembled engine on the shop floor, and ask tons of questions about engine repair and more. We also introduced key life skills, like checking the oil and changing a tire.

Through those experiences, we hoped to take the mystery out of cars and make the industry much more approachable to our visitors. But our efforts don’t end there. We’re always here to help everyone feel more comfortable bringing their car to the shop and making important car care decisions. If you ever need any additional support, just let us know, and we’ll do all we can to make your auto repair experience as easy and stress-free as possible.

Everyday Ways to Get Girls Involved in the Auto Repair World

If you’d like to get the girls in your life comfortable with auto repairs, it’s essential to start early by:

  • Helping them learn all they can about how every automotive system works and why
  • Involving them in everyday car care tasks, like checking fluids and gauging tire tread wear
  • Bringing them to the shop with you to listen in during your discussions with the service advisor
  • Letting them help you select your new set of tires, starting with finding the size on the sidewall

Beyond all that, simply encourage them to explore the different jobs in the automotive repair field, including service advisors, technicians, and shop owners.

As you do all that, remember that our team at Girlington Garage is always here to help you handle your auto maintenance and repairs. So, please feel free to give us a call at 802-247-7917 or fill out our online form to schedule your visit.
